The Phantom Surfers
"Istanbul" b/w "Tokyo Twist"
Lookout (7")
Who would have thought that an instrumental surf version of "Istanbul"
could be so likeable? Well, The Phantom Surfers take it on, and with
the Ventures as their role models this sounds like the real stuff.
While Dick Dale is pushing the envelope with surf virtuosity, guitarist
Swell Mel, drummer Maz Spazz and bassist Junky Johnny pump up the
traditional '60s sound. The b-side, "Tokyo Twist," continues in the
same surf guitar mode, brimming with s-punk enthusiasm that makes it
difficult to hold still. Lookout Records is describing them as "the
most intelligent, inspired band in existence," and although that may be
taking things a bit far, they certainly add a new dimenstion to the
label's discography. --es
